Greece | Part 2: Island of Mykonos, Sept 2015

Day 4:  Ferry from Port of Pireus to Mykonos.

The ferry was right on time and very efficiently run.  They were very large and the lounges and decks were very similar to cruise ships.  We were very comfortable on our 4 hour trip to the Island of Mykonos

We made a stop at the the beautiful island of Siros

MYKONOS

Our first stop was our hotel -  Porto Mykonos.  It was right on the water by the small marina and just a short walk to town.

THE HOTEL:   Porto Mykonos is a beautiful hillside hotel built in the typical "sugar cube" style of Mykonos.   We had a pool and great views of the Adriatic and Mykonos Town.

OUR ROOM
Our room was the top floor of this "sugar cube".  Rooms were typical in that they had small windows to keep out the heat of the day.

We went up the stairs and through our private courtyard to get to our room.
Our private couryard outside our room

The room was small and plain but we had a great ocean view.

Our private balcony/courtyard with fantastic views

.... and this was the view every morning at breakfast.

MYONOS TOWN:
After we settled into our room, we went into town to explore.  It was about 1 km to town- downhill.

Our hotel is on the left - just to the right of the bus

The downtown area is a maze of very narrow pedestrian streets filled with shops and restaurants.  Very touristy, but we had a lot of fun getting lost in the labyrinth of narrow winding streets.

The waterfront is this way!

All restaurants are outdoors and become alive at night.  It is very pleasant to spend time sitting or walking in the evening as it is very warm and there are no bugs.

Here are some photos of the iconic scenes of Mykonos:  The Windmills, Little Venice with the colourful balconies overhanging the water,  Petros the pink pelican,  the famous blue doors (which weren't always blue)  and the sunset.

Day 5:

Delos Island Tour ;  Enjoying free time the pool at the hotel;  & dinner by the water and walking around town.

Ancient Delos was a shrine, sacred treasury and commercial centre from 500 BC and is best known as the mythical birthplace of twins Apollo and Artemis.  This Unesco World Heritage Site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. The island, just 5km long and 1300m wide, has no permanent population and is a 40 min boat ride from Mykonos.   Overnight stays are forbidden and boat schedules allow a maximum of four hours at Delos.

This is what Delos would look like in its heyday between the 6th and 4th centuries BC (about 2500 years ago)

Wall painting found in one of the ancient houses  ( Looks like  1990's wallpaper border )

This mosaic was found in a house and is preserved in the museum on the island

.

After a very warm morning walking around Delos with no shade, we had a great afternoon at the pool.   The pool was salty and cold.  We assume the water may have come from the ocean as fresh water is at a premium on the islands.

Then is was off to wander about town and have dinner with friends by the water.
Our beach-side restaurant to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner with friends.

Day 6:  Fast Ferry to Santorini

A storm had rolled in and we had a rough ride most of the way to Santorini.  We were on the high-speed ferry this time and were strapped into airplane type seating.  It was about 3 hours.
