DANUBE CRUISE '13 | Passau & A Look Around our Ship

Embarkation Day in Passau Germany

We had a long ride from Prague to Passau this morning, luckily the scenery was quite nice

Our first glance at the Danube

When we got to Passau we had some lunch then met up for a walking tour of the city.  This is a beautiful old city with lots of beautiful Baroque architecture.

One of our first stops was the beautiful Baroque St Stephen's Cathedral.  It has the largest organ in Europe and we were lucky enough to go in during an organ recital... WOW! the sound gives you chills, very beautiful.  I have seen the photo of this church so many times over the years in music text books.  It is very thrilling to see it in person and actually hear the organ.

Wandering the streets of this ancient city

This castle overlook Passau at the junction of the Danube, Inn and the Ilz Rivers was first constructed in 1219.  A reno was done in 1499 as is shown by the date on the side of the castle.

In June of 2013, three months before we came to Passau, they had the worst flood in 500 years.  All three rivers flooded the city and the flood waters rose to the second story of building.  The building where we had lunch was completely under water 3 months earlier  (no wonder everything looked new and clean there).

Our guide pointing out the high level of June's flood.  We could see the water line on most of the buildings -either new stucco, or a water stain.

Records of floods have been kept on this wall for 500 years
On this street parallel to the Danube, the water went up to the hanging hearts.

Time to Board our ship

We just realized that we didn't start the blog with an itinerary or map of our travels.  So here it is ...better late than never.  We landed in Munich and went up to Prague pre cruise for 4 days.  Then boarded the ship in Passau and went to Budapest and back (dotted line on the map).  After the cruise we took the bus from Passau back to Munich for Oktoberfest.
