DANUBE CRUISE | LOCKS and LOW BRIDGES

We went through about 22 locks during the week.  We went from Passau to Budapest and back again with 11 locks each way.  Many of them were during the night or while we were eating, so we didn't really notice that we went through so many.  The locks are very large and most were double locks.  Since the Danube is an international waterway, the ships do not have to pay lock fees.

Going Down!

The doors close by rising up from under the water

Going through a Lock while we were in our room.  The lock walls are very clean (and close)

Our TV with the ship cam.

Going Up!

The door will lower for the ship to pass through.

Going Up!

We are the only ship, so only one door is open

LOW BRIDGES!

Some of the bridges on the Danube are very low.  Water was high because of of recent rains.   We had to board the ship 30 km down river as the water was too high for the ship to get under a bridge near our departure port of Passau.  No problem - the bus took us on the river road up to the new dock.

The Captain sails the ship from a pilot house (the glass circle is a skylight for the foyer)

When a low bridge is coming up the pilot house is lowered into the ship.

Even the furniture on the top deck is lowered -note the umbrellas on hinges and then laid down.
Pilot House is lowered and passengers must SIT facing forward.  The guy in the red shirt is a crew member making sure we are all seated and facing forward.

Very Low Bridge - Please be seated!
